The Brazilian has suffered a hamstring injury and will be assessed during the international break.
The news broke after the Brazilian FA today reported that the Liverpool player had been pulled out of the Brazil squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The Benfica player Jonas has been called up to replace the Reds man.
At first it was thought the injury was not serious with some translations suggestions "bruising" but the ECHO can confirm it is a hamstring problem.
It is of course not the first hamstring problem Liverpool have suffered this season with Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel, Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Rossiter all suffering similar problems at some stage.
It prompted Jurgen Klopp to call it the "s*** word of the year' back in December.
The statement on the Brazil FA website said: “The striker Jonas, of Benfica, is summoned for the matches against Uruguay (March 25, at the Arena Pernambuco) and Paraguay (March 29, in the Defensores del Chaco in Asunción).

The 24-year-old was not originally selected in the Brazil squad but was given a call-up after a withdrawal.
Firmino has been one of the form players of the Premier League since the turn of the year, scoring seven goals with another in the Europa League against Manchester United.
